Webinar Recap: Beyond the Red Zone: How AI is Transforming Rig Safety
ESBAAR recently hosted a webinar on “Beyond the Red Zone: How AI is Transforming Rig Safety” featuring Jawahir Al Raisi and Mohammed Al Sayyad. The session explored how RIG AI uses computer vision and WITS sensor data to monitor red zones, detect PPE violations, and enhance situational awareness on the rig floor. Attendees learned about the difference between Rig floor Monitoring and Rig floor Management and features like real-time activity detection and zone classification.
On April 15, we hosted an insightful webinar titled “Beyond the Red Zone: How AI is Transforming Rig Safety.” The session featured Jawahir Al Raisi (Product Manager) and Mohammed Al Sayyad (Senior AI Engineer), who led over 65 engaged attendees through an in-depth look at how AI technology is advancing safety protocols on rig floors and redefining how red zones are managed in drilling operations.
Key Highlights
Management vs. Monitoring of Red Zones The session began by distinguishing between managing and monitoring red zones. Management involves a structured approach to enforcing safety protocols, ensuring only authorized personnel access high-risk areas. Monitoring, on the other hand, uses cameras, sensors, and AI software to detect unsafe or unauthorized activity in real time, providing critical support for on-the-ground decision-makers.
What is RIG AI? Attendees were introduced to RIG AI, a safety solution that blends computer vision and AI-powered WITS data processing to track activities on the rig floor. This system offers real-time alerts, safety insights, and automated analysis to support more efficient and secure rig operations.
Benefits of RIG AI The speakers highlighted how RIG AI boosts situational awareness, improves staff safety, reduces incidents and downtime, ensures compliance with HSE standards, and enhances operational transparency by delivering actionable insights into red zone behaviors.
RIG AI Features A breakdown of the platform’s core capabilities was shared, including rig floor monitoring, drilling activity detection, zone classification, alerting mechanisms, a live analytics dashboard, and automated detection of PPE compliance.
Solution Blueprint Overview Participants were guided through the architecture of RIG AI, illustrating how its components—hardware, AI models, and dashboard—work together to create an intelligent safety system that operates proactively rather than reactively.
Rig Floor Monitoring The session detailed how specialized CCTV cameras ensure full red zone visibility while AI models identify people and equipment in real time. Any unauthorized entry into restricted areas is immediately flagged.
Drilling Activity Detection Using Recurrent Neural Networks and time-series analysis, RIG AI interprets real-time sensor data to understand what kind of drilling activity is underway, allowing safety logic to dynamically adapt based on ongoing operations.
Zone Classification The system categorizes the rig floor into green (safe), yellow (caution), and red (high-risk) zones. These zones are continually updated to reflect current operations, guiding both AI responses and crew awareness.
Alerting System Whenever a breach of safety protocols occurs, the system instantly generates alerts to notify supervisors and rig staff. This real-time response helps prevent injuries and minimizes downtime by enabling immediate corrective action.
PPE Detection RIG AI continuously monitors PPE compliance via live video feeds. If essential gear like helmets or safety boots are missing or removed, the system logs the violation and notifies relevant personnel, ensuring constant enforcement of safety rules.
Analytics Dashboard A comprehensive dashboard was showcased, giving attendees a look at how managers can access real-time and historical data on safety metrics, including zone breaches, PPE violations, staff compliance, and drilling activity.
Client Success Stories The webinar wrapped up by spotlighting companies that have deployed RIG AI successfully. These real-world cases demonstrated measurable improvements in safety, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
Q&A Session
Participants engaged in a lively discussion, asking about deployment timelines, and how the solution can be tailored to different rig configurations and environments.
